ColumbiaDoctors: Tarrytown MRI Suite Expansion
To meet the growing demand for advanced diagnostic imaging services, Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) undertook a significant renovation at the ColumbiaDoctors Tarrytown facility located at 155 White Plains Road. Talisen Construction was proud to partner with CUIMC to enhance its imaging department by accommodating the installation of a new state-of-the-art 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. This MRI suite expansion project, designed to integrate with existing facilities seamlessly, further solidifies ColumbiaDoctors’ reputation as a leader in medical imaging.
Scope of Work
The MRI suite renovation and expansion encompassed approximately 930 gross square feet on the first floor of the ColumbiaDoctors building. Talisen Construction partnered with Array Architects and Loring Consulting Engineers, Inc. to create a comprehensive approach to this project, which included the following key measures:
- Renovations to the existing space within the imaging department to accommodate a new 1.5T MRI scanner
- Renovations to the MRI room and MRI equipment room
- Expansion of an existing MRI control room
- Demolition of an existing Interventional Radiology (IR) room and corresponding IR Prep & Recovery rooms to make room for the new MRI
- Utilization of an existing rigging path for successful 1.5T MRI delivery
- Upgrades to infrastructure to support the new MRI, including a dedicated cryogen vent, chiller, and electrical feed
- Extension of an MRI slab to comply with the new Department of Health requirements
Key Features & Project Highlights
State-of-the-Art Imaging Facilities
Adding a new 1.5T MRI scanner enhances ColumbiaDoctors’ diagnostic capabilities and ensures access to cutting-edge imaging technology.
Efficient Space Utilization
The new 1.5T MRI zones, control room, and support spaces are shared with an existing 3T MRI on-site, highlighting an efficient and strategic approach to space management.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Enhancements
Talisen’s crucial upgrades to the building’s infrastructure, such as the installation of a dedicated cryogen vent and chiller, ensure the facility’s MRI scanners operate at peak efficiency.
Challenges & Solutions
- Integration with Existing Facilities: One of the primary challenges was integrating the new MRI installation with the existing 3T MRI suite without disrupting ongoing operations. Talisen’s team meticulously planned the renovation, ensuring a seamless transition and minimal impact on the facility’s day-to-day activities.
- Logistical Coordination: Delivering and installing the new MRI involved navigating a complex rigging path. Pre-existing knock-out panels designed for this purpose enabled a smooth and efficient installation process.
Project Outcome
The successful completion of this project marks a significant enhancement to the ColumbiaDoctors imaging department. The new 1.5T MRI scanner, supported by comprehensive infrastructure upgrades, provides CUIMC with the tools necessary to continue to offer top-tier diagnostic services. Talisen Construction’s ability to manage complex medical construction projects is reflected in the seamless integration of the new MRI with existing facilities, ensuring ColumbiaDoctors remains at the forefront of medical imaging.
