Google: Stair J

In the heart of Chelsea, Talisen Construction undertook a monumental project for tech giant Google: constructing a 300-ton, 16-story custom-designed steel staircase within the confines of an old truck freight elevator shaft in just seven months. Propelled by Taconic Partners and HLW International, this innovative project not only showcased Talisen’s expertise but also demonstrated the agility and innovation of our NY metropolitan construction team.

Project Challenges

This project for Google presented several significant challenges, including complex logistics, a tight schedule, and cost considerations. Coordinating the various trade professionals involved in the project, especially considering the steel contractors’ progress, was crucial to avoid delays. Additionally, the transportation and installation of a unique “light cannon” to the building’s rooftop added to the project’s complexity.

The Talisen Construction Solution

Innovation

Talisen proposed an unconventional approach: building the staircase from the top down using mast-climbing scaffolds on either side of the elevator shaft. This method allowed other trade professionals to work concurrently with the steel contractors, reducing wait times and minimizing disruption. Learn more about the process in our blog post here.

Collaboration

Close collaboration with the design and engineering teams, as well as weekly meetings with key trade partners, ensured that the project progressed smoothly. Open communication and a shared commitment to innovation were key to overcoming challenges and delivering the project successfully.

Project Outcome

Despite the project’s complexity, Talisen completed the ultramodern staircase in just seven months, exceeding Google’s expectations by nearly a year. The project’s success was a testament to Talisen’s ability to innovate, collaborate, and deliver exceptional results.

Today, visitors to Google’s headquarters at 111 Eighth Avenue can marvel at the 16-story staircase, a symbol of modern construction excellence.
